| Using a yoga mat bag, carrier, tote or yoga mat sling are a few ways to keep your yoga mat from unrolling while you commute to and from yoga class. I prefer a full coverage yoga mat bag to slings simply because they protect my mat from abrasion and keep it clean. Long straps make the bag easy and comfortable to carry over the shoulder for walking, cycling or taking the bus. A good yoga bag will also have extra pockets or space inside to hold your keys and wallet and even a water bottle. Your yoga mat is an investment and even a simple yoga mat bag can prolong the life of the mat. | ||
Of course there are alternatives. I have seen people keep their mat rolled with velcro straps, tied with rubber bands, packed in garbage bags or even cloth shopping bags. Whatever suits your style and gets you to class is fine. Craftier folks may opt for making their own yoga mat bag as there are numerous patterns and how-to videos available online. For the rest of us, there are many options and styles of yoga mat bags ranging from the utilitarian to haute couture.
Things to keep in mind when purchasing a yoga mat bag or carrier:
- Make sure your bag will fit your mat! If you choose a thick yoga mat, an extra long mat or a wide yoga mat the dimensions of the rolled mat should be checked against the capacity of your new yoga mat bag, particularly when buying online. If you are unsure, ask questions.
- I prefer a bag that will allow my yoga mat to air. Either one that’s made of a breathable fabric or one that has mesh venting in the design.
- If you also would like your bag to have capacity or pockets to hold your other belongings – keys, wallet, water bottle etc. make sure the fasteners on the pockets are sturdy to hold your valuables. Also, you may opt for a water-resistant material if you live in a rainy climate.
